Introduction
Founded in 1997, the NVAC Institute of Mental Health (IMH) conducts weekly interaction sessions among volunteers and residents diagnosed with schizophrenia at IMH with the cooperation of the healthcare staff. Sessions involve activities such as arts and craft, indoor and outdoor games, as well as outings and festive celebrations.

Objectives & Activities
Regular interactions build up companionship and empathy, a source of emotional support to residents in the ward. The activities are planned according to the residents’ interests, in order to engage and entertain them, as well as giving them an avenue to express themselves through art and music. Games and outings provide exercise and are able to train psychomotor skills, and at times encourage the spirit of competition and teamwork.

Warded residents often do not have the freedom of socialising that most of us would take for granted. Volunteers in IMH keep this in mind and we aim to maintain the residents’ ability to socialise, build up their confidence and self-esteem, and most of all, provide fun-filled sessions to put smiles on the residents, and volunteers.
